S2 E6: CALEB WOJCIK – CONTENT VISIONARY
Caleb’s wild ride to becoming a creative entrepreneur started with learning the in’s and out’s around making videos. As it turns out, that was a smart move since video has become the primary mode of communication, advertising, and even educating in the digital world.
With his DIY Video Guy platform, he has turned what can be an expensive and intimidating venture—making videos—into an accessible, effective one. His community of over 7,100 strong continues to learn from his tutorials on youtube, his podcast, and even a newsletter.
Most recently, Caleb was inspired to invent something totally new. He found that people shooting video today lacked something fundamental: a versatile tripod that made it simple to shoot in a variety of ways. It switches from handheld to tripod instantly, it’s lightweight, it’s compact, and it’s durable.
As an expert in making videos, there couldn’t be a more qualified person to understand the problems…and solve them. Here are Caleb’s Three Big How’s:
THREE BIG HOW’S
GET YOUR GEAR RIGHT
You don’t have to spend a massive amount of money, but get what you need so you don’t have to make any excuses. For example, if sound is really important to you, research mics and get what you need. If you need equipment so you can shoot with your phone, get that. You might not need everything at once, but set yourself up for success.
KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE
Figure out why people are going to be interested in you. Put yourself in their shoes. Think specifically of who you want to talk to, and then talk to them. In fact, Caleb’s trick in terms of vlogging, etc. is to actually print out a picture of someone who fits the persona of who he wants to talk to, cut it out, and tape it under the lens he’s facing.
As you’re building your brand, you don’t have to be someone else. You don’t have to be loud and obnoxious just because that works for somebody else. Be you, stick with it, and you’ll find yourself getting used to it.
BONUS: MAKE VIDEOS PEOPLE WOULD SEARCH FOR
To grow your audience, make it easy for them to find your videos. Don’t get too cute, don’t be click-baity, just make it easy. For example, title your videos what people would search for. Don’t go for shock value…go for clarity!
Caleb is a great story of finding many depths of possibilities in your field of choice. He learned to make videos. Then he taught people to make videos. Then he created a physical product to help people make videos better. It doesn’t get much more creative than that!
