We did this one a little differently than previous recaps. Yes, we touched on our favorite moment and all that stuff, but we also pulled from our own careers to discuss some important topics for creatives. Here are some quick notes from the episode:

FAVORITE MOMENT OF SEASON 3

Sean – Sean, an accomplished graphic designer along with being a creative director, had a eureka moment when tattooer Jackie Singer-Sabur said he shouldn’t design his own tattoo. Jackie explained the many considerations a tattooer has to consider that other artists don’t have to think about. In particular, the medium is the human body, which changes over time and, therefore, can change the art itself/

Jed – Jed was impressed by film director Ruben Fleischer’s constant, relentless trying of new things early in his career until he figured out what he was great at. Having moved to California as a coder, Ruben jumped over to film-making and started at the bottom. He tried his hand at many aspects of the process and ultimately found that directing was his calling.

MOST BENEFICIAL TRAIT FOR A CREATIVE TO HAVE

Sean – How dedicated are you to your craft? That was something Sean has seen in his career and was reinforced by all our Season 3 guests. Even your hobbies should feed your creative abilities.

Jed – Collaboration. Many young creatives have a desire to own ALL of their work…to be recognized for it. There comes a time when you need to realize that collaboration unlocks all kinds of doors. Whether it’s practical collaboration on the project or even just using others as a sound board, other perspectives will almost always help.

BIGGEST EYE OPENER OF SEASON 3

Jed – Continuing to find new and different kinds of creatives and creative jobs. That was one of our early goals, but we were more astounded than ever in Season 3. People like plant stylist Hilton Carton and theme ride creator Amanda Johnstone-Batt opened our eyes once again to the possibilities of creative work.

Sean – Work ethic…the seeming ability of our guests to tack on extra hours in a day. Somehow these people are driving so hard at honing their craft and producing work that it truly seems they are super-human. You can always work harder.

HARDEST MOMENT OF SEASON 3

Jed – A simple verbal “typo” made when talking to ice cream wizard David Alima made Jed feel like an idiot. We do a lot of research, so mistakes are rare. It wasn’t a big deal, but it was a reminder to slow down a little bit.

Sean – The multiple glitches we experienced when Skyping singer/songwriter Emma Klein was really frustrating. She kept nailing the answers, and we kept asking her to repeat them because of the glitches. It ends up we chose the wrong wi-fi bandwidth when we started the session. Simple details.

DREAM GUESTS

Sean – Revolutionary graphic designer David Carson and horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan

Jed – Beastie Boys Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz and actress/producer/entrepreneur Reese Witherspoon
